Amtrak Accident Outside of Philadelphia Leaves 2 Dead & At Least 30 Injured

On Sunday, April 3, an Amtrak traveling from New York to Savannah, Georgia crashed into a backhoe, a large piece of heavy machinery, just south of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The vehicle was carrying 341 passengers. As a result, two persons were killed and at least 30 persons suffered injuries.
Ryan Frigo, a National Transportation Safety Board official who is responsible for the crash investigation, states that the NTSB is working diligently to gather facts regarding the collision. Currently, he and his team are investigating the following factors:
- Mechanical issues
- Operations
- The track
- Human performance
- Survival factors
As of now, the team has collected forward-facing video footage, inward-facing video footage, and evidence from data. This information along with any other information that is to be gathered from the investigation is to be compiled and sent to the NTSB’s laboratory in Washington, D.C.
One of Three Amtrak Accidents on Sunday, April 3
Shockingly, the collision south of Philadelphia was only the first of three Amtrak crashes that occurred that Sunday. According to news reports, these three accidents all occurred within a 12-hour window. In Bucks County, Pennsylvania, a trespasser was hit and killed by an Amtrak that evening. In Somonauk, a small town located in Illinois, a 28-year-old sustained fatal injuries when they were struck by a vehicle that was hit by an Amtrak train.
