On December 29, 2016, Councilman Michael Colon and our very own Olga Negrón-Dipiní, a councilwoman, presented a memo to the City Clerk. This was included on the very first City Council meeting of 2017, which took place on January 3. The purpose of this memo was to advance a proposed Ordinance on Ethics.
When asked about the details, Negrón-Dipiní explained that while she was running for the position as a councilwoman, she was challenged to craft an Ethic Ordinance to ensure transparency within the Bethlehem city government. She expresses that through this submission, she is able to express her commitment to provide an Amendment to Bethlehem’s existing ordinance, which includes an “anti-pay to play law.”
Councilman Colon agreed that it was the most optimal time to work with their colleagues on City Council in order to construct such an ordinance. He states that their goal is to remain proactive in pursuing such goals rather than remaining reactive.
In November, Northampton County and the South Side Initiative’s Women Voters presented a panel discussion with experts on Ethics throughout Commonwealth. The ample amount of participation confirmed the wide range of interest on the issue of ethics.
